I started my business life in tourism while studying at the university —the field I believed to involve the “human factor” in all aspects and contribute to good organization and problem-solving skills. Thus, my first professional experience was in Abdullah Travel Agency (1984) as the incoming operations executive. In 1986 I took a position at the CEO’s office of the Tütünbank-Irving Trust Company New York partnership based in İzmir. This is also where I attended the management trainee program, one of the first examples in Turkey of a practice that later was widely adopted. Upon the termination of the two banks’ partnership, I took the inside sales staff post at Lufthansa German Airlines’ İzmir town office. At the end of 1990, I moved to İstanbul. In 1992 I started freelance translation work when I temporarily ceased working full time in firms to help my son prepare for his high school examinations. From July 1994 to October 1998 I worked with Microsoft Turkey, first as office manager, then human resources liaison. At the beginning of 2000 I took a post at dDf International as the coordinator of the international marketing and advertising campaign of the Turkish Ministry of Tourism. I managed the campaign in 22 countries until 2003. In 2000, in addition to my ongoing work as translator, I started writing applications for projects, some of which I was asked to manage upon receipt of grant. I have since written project applications in Turkish and English to the European Commission and other funds. In 2005 I directed an EC-financed human resources and training project at the Foundation of Advertising and Association of Advertising Agencies. From March to December 2006 I worked as the project-based Senior Account Director for the international marketing and advertising campaign of the Turkish Ministry of Tourism in Wunderman İstanbul, and from July 2009 to January 2011 as the Project Coordinator of the European project “Hulda Festival” implemented by the İlhan Koman Foundation and funded by the 7th Framework Program in the area of “Science in Society.”

Since 1992, I
have been active as a freelance translator in addition to my full-time
positions in multinational companies and turned to full-time translation after
2006. For me, translation is more than reciprocity of languages. It is a means
of conveying the primary message by using cultural differences and similarities
for which researching and understanding constitutes the key to successful
results. My experience in companies and projects has helped me familiarize with
practices and master terminologies within a diverse range of fields from IT to
medicine and pharmaceuticals, to marketing, advertising and PR. I also
specialize in art translations as part of my personal interest in the field.
